We are currently carrying out a restoration project in Gwanaksan Mountain, Gwacheon City, Gyeonggi Province, in collaboration with Microsoft, Andong National University, InvaLab, and local volunteer organizations. The project involves removing the invasive species Solidago altissima (tall goldenrod) and planting native species. Gwanaksan, located near Seoul, is a mountain where residents can enjoy hiking and nature. However, through direct investigation, we discovered that in recent years, Solidago altissima has been disrupting the mountain’s natural biodiversity. Physical removal was conducted twice, on June 14 and August 30, 2024, followed by the sowing of native plant seeds in the target area. As these restoration efforts continue, the project will collect data to assess the recovery of native species and compare the overall restoration of the surrounding interconnected ecosystems. This project is supported by the Ecological Restoration Society and Microsoft, with Microsoft volunteers leading events to help restore the natural beauty of Gwanaksan and nearby Umyeonsan.
