Many companies are expanding their biodiversity initiatives as part of their ESG commitments. However, in practice, many struggle to determine where, what, and how to act, often limiting their efforts to one-off tree-planting events. In many cases, the impact of biodiversity activities is never properly measured, leaving only a few photographs to be included in ESG reports.

Recently, biodiversity has emerged as a new ESG agenda, particularly in Europe, as discussions around the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) gain momentum. TNFD encourages companies to disclose their dependencies, impacts, and risks related to nature. In South Korea, the issue is also attracting growing attention as the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment considers incorporating corporate biodiversity information into disclosure frameworks. As a result, the related market is rapidly gaining interest.

According to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the global economic damage caused by invasive alien species reached USD 423 billion as of 2019. The organization estimates that these costs have increased approximately fourfold every decade since 1970. Despite growing awareness of the importance of biodiversity initiatives, many companies still struggle to determine where and how restoration efforts should be carried out and how their effectiveness should be measured.

To address this challenge, a startup has emerged to help companies identify and implement nature restoration projects. Founded in 2023, InvaLab is a nature-tech company that supports businesses seeking to undertake biodiversity and ecological restoration initiatives. The company provides end-to-end services, from site identification and restoration planning to project implementation and post-restoration monitoring.

Wonhyeop Shin, CEO of InvaLab, said, “Reducing carbon emissions is important, but cutting carbon alone does not restore ecosystems.” He added, “Biodiversity will become the next major agenda after carbon.”

He continued, “The time is coming when companies will be expected to demonstrate how much nature has actually recovered, rather than simply planting trees. Biodiversity is likely to influence corporate value and supply chain competitiveness in the future as well.”
